The property became financially unworkable after 2023 changes to New Yorkโ€™s rent laws made it impossible to raise rents on reconfigured units. L+M tried to walk away. Santander said no. Both sides are in court arguing over default clauses, nonrecourse language, and the meaning of โ€œabandonment.โ€ For real estate operators, especially in regulated markets: ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐จ๐š๐ง ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐. โ€œNonrecourseโ€ doesnโ€™t always mean youโ€™re off the hook. ๐‹๐š๐ฐ๐ฌ ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž.
