Years ago, the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., faced a serious problemโthe stones were deteriorating. Tourists complained, maintenance costs skyrocketed, and the memorialโs image suffered. The obvious solution? Replace the stones. But a deeper lookโby asking why?โled to a much simpler and more effective answer.

At first glance, the issue was clear:
The memorialโs stone was eroding.
Tourists were unhappy with its condition.
Cleaning crews spent too much time maintaining it.
Costs for cleaning supplies kept rising.
A surface-level fix would be to replace the stones or change cleaning methods. But a good leader doesnโt just treat symptomsโthey uncover root causes. So they asked:
Why is the stone deteriorating?
Because itโs being cleaned too often.
Why is it being cleaned so often?
Because birds keep leaving droppings all over the structure.
Why are there so many birds?
Because theyโre feeding on the large spider population.
Why are there so many spiders?
Because they are attracted to an abundance of moths.
Why are there so many moths?
Because the memorialโs lights attract them in swarms at night.
The real problem wasnโt the stoneโit was the lights.
The Simple Fix? Adjust the Lights.
Instead of replacing the stone, spraying pesticides, or trying to chase away birds, they simply changed when the lights turned onโdelaying them by a couple of hours. That small shift reduced the moth population, which led to fewer spiders, fewer birds, and ultimately, less cleaning and stone damage.

Too often, businesses throw money at problems without identifying the root cause. A failing marketing campaign? Maybe itโs not the adsโitโs the product. A high employee turnover rate? Maybe itโs not compensationโitโs poor management.
Before investing time and resources into expensive fixes, ask why? You might find the real solution is simplerโand much cheaperโthan you think.
Where in your business should you be asking why a few more times?
