The banks create money by lending it into existence. It's a beautiful system when it works, and a terrifying one when it doesn't. When they stop lending, it's like cutting off the oxygen to the economy's brain. The CRE market, which has been huffing this credit oxygen like it's going out of style, suddenly finds itself gasping for air.
Remember, in the world of commercial real estate, leverage is king. These developers are used to building empires with other people's money. When that money dries up, it's like trying to build a skyscraper with popsicle sticks.
