The Art of Spotting Real Business Moats Most “competitive advantages” are just temporary luck in disguise. Many businesses think they have moats. What they really have are puddles. Does your business have any Moats or is it just another “Me Too” company? I’ve watched brilliant people pour millions into companies with “advantages” that dried up faster than spilled coffee. If you’re serious about investing in or scaling businesses, learning to spot real moats vs. mirages isn’t optional—it’s critical! What Real Moats Actually Look Like 🔁 Network Effects The more users join, the more valuable it gets for everyone. Think eBay, Facebook, or Airbnb. Test: Does value scale exponentially with each new user? 📎 Switching Costs Painful to leave? That’s power. Microsoft Office and Oracle survived better alternatives because change was too costly or disruptive. Test: Can a customer leave on a weekend without pain? No moat. 📦 Scale Advantages Getting better because you’re bigger. Walmart and Google built compounding advantages from logistics and data. Test: Does growth improve your product/system or just your profit? ✨ Intangible Assets Stuff you can’t copy in 5 years: brands, IP, regulatory licenses. Coca-Cola’s brand. Disney’s character library. Pharma patents. Test: Could a $1B competitor recreate it from scratch? 💸 Structural Cost Advantage Not just lean ops—structural wins. GEICO’s direct model beat incumbents. Ryanair’s bare-bones model redefined costs. Test: Can a competitor match your costs without wrecking their business? Fake Moats People Still Fall For 🚩 First-Mover Advantage Being first means nothing if others can follow fast. MySpace was first. 🚩 Superior Tech Tech gets copied fast. Unless it creates lock-in or network effects, it’s not a moat—it’s a head start. 🚩 Great Management If your edge retires at 65, you never had a moat—just a good captain. 🚩 Customer Relationships Nice sentiment. But unless those create real lock-in, they’re easy to steal. The Durability Tests ✅ Time Test Do you get stronger with age? Amazon compounds. ✅ Attack Test Throw a billion-dollar competitor at it. Google held off Microsoft. That’s real. ✅ Substitute Test Can new solutions kill your category? Netflix didn’t outcompete Blockbuster—it made it irrelevant. ✅ Regulation Test Would your business survive if the law changed? If not, you’re on borrowed time. Real moats are rare. That’s what makes them valuable. The rest? Temporary illusions dressed up in pitch decks. Study moats. Test moats. Bet on moats. Moats print money. Puddles drain it.
