In a sea of sameness, differentiation is the margin. Walked through Best Buy this week and something jumped out at me: Most of the PCs on display are no longer boring black boxes. Tempered glass. RGB fans. Custom cases. They turned a commodity into a statement. And the price tags tell the story: • The “plain box” Dell towers were priced around $749–$799. • The glowing, showpiece rigs? $1,199–$1,599. Same function. Same Windows. Same basic hardware inside. But the design unlocks a premium margin. This is business 101: When you blend in, you compete on cost. When you stand out, you compete on value. The lesson isn’t just for PC makers. It applies to apartments, to services, to anything sold in a crowded market. Are you selling the beige box—or the one with the glowing fan?
