šŸ”„ Can Airbnb’s Next Move Inspire the Apartment Industry? ā€œAirbnb built an empire by unlocking underutilized space. Now they’re betting big on unlocking underutilized experiences.ā€ In a fascinating WSJ feature (linked below), Airbnb is attempting to redefine travel again—not by offering better places to stay, but by owning what travelers do when they get there. Surf lessons, truffle hunts, massage bookings—things people remember far longer than the thread count. It’s risky. Unlike home rentals, experiences are hard to scale. Margins are thin. Bookings happen late. Hosts don’t always want to act like tour operators. But here’s what struck me: could we in the apartment industry learn from this? Most apartments today are commodity boxes with a location or amenity sheet as the USP. We compete on pricing, views, countertops, and pet-friendliness. Maybe we toss in a Taco Tuesday or dog-wash station. But what if the real opportunity isn’t in the space, but in the experiences we help create? Imagine a resident community with: Monthly sushi-rolling classes led by a local chef Sunday morning trail hikes with a regular group A wine club hosted by a sommelier-in-residence Meditation on the rooftop every Wednesday Rotating guest creators (artists, musicians, photographers) Not gimmicks. Not just events. Recurring, value-rich experiences that residents look forward to and invite their friends to. Those kinds of experiences build memory, loyalty, and emotional resonance—something most leasing brochures can’t buy. 🧠 So here’s what I’m pondering: What would it look like to brand an apartment community around curated lifestyle experiences? Could recurring events become the new ā€œamenityā€? What if our best asset isn’t the gym, but the feeling of being part of something? Let’s challenge the norm. Taco Tuesday was just the start. šŸ‘‡ Would love to hear from you: Have you ever seen this done well in multifamily? What recurring experience would make you stay longer in an apartment? šŸ“Ž https://lnkd.in/eeS_zyeY
